Hi friends I only recently discovered the website for people who previously lived in Mufulira. It was quite exciting to read through the list of names, and see how many I could recognise. I am hoping that some of you will respond and that we can swop news. It would be nice to know how you have all got on with your lives, and what you are currently doing etc. I am sorry I missed the reunion which was held recently, but am looking forward to the next one. Hope you have all aged gracefully. Yours in friendship Allan Bowles

Ken Taylor was a fitter and was in the Mine Workshops for years. He played a lot of cricket. For those who remember them and would like me to pass on their best wishes at their anniversary please let me know via Email to rexdel@norex.com.au. Thanks Rex D'Elboux

Hi all Mark Mulder here, Andy Perry, I'm sure I remember you, Maybe your brother, but the name rings a bell. Maybe you used to come along to some of the Mark II Dico dances we had? I was also at Bording school, Falcon College, just outside Bulawayo, The Eskimo hut was a favourite stop with trips into town. Do you remember it Sharon Gilroy. Now Madeleine Luckin, are you related to Adaire, Bennie, Bob and Berryl Bekker? - Best friends on My Mum and Dad! With all this talk about remembering shops. I think we all remember Tommy Tuckers, what about Solankis, Did any have a Brown Cow (coke and Icecream) from Jumbos? I think I bought every record out of Kingstons, and had my pictures developed by Norman Kenwoods. My mum always did her grocery shopping at McCraes Cash and Carry, And I remember there always seemed to be a guy outside who did watch repairs, when people could repair watches!! What was the name of the cycle shop diagonally oposite the market, was it Shorties? oh and Bata was there for ever, up by the banks and alongside Joe Jacksons - the Auctioneers. At the top shops mostly I remember the dairy with its soft serves and Belmonts. Any of your memories come to lite with those Miss Hannah? I think my Dad and yours worked together on the mine. Gotta go, Ciao, Mark

Hi ???, Yes I remember several shops in Mufulira. Toms Stores - McClelands and Suzmans which was in the 'Native shopping area". He had everything one could wish for, from lace and material to bicyles. There was also a Dairy Cafe in the main street, which had red and white checked table cloths and curtains, where one bought 1 penny chocolates. Three of them would be nearly the size of the small slab of chocolate today. Chocolate Logs were always in short supply and when they came in, they were bought out very quickly - this was the case also at the mine shop in the Club and Bioscope area. I lived there from 1946 till end of 1960. Madeleine Luckin nee Bekker - mml@tenaka.co.za

Ok, no replies to my first message so I shall try a different approach. Surely someone out there remembers New Year 1978. The pop charts were dominated by Barbara Streusand and Neil Diamond and their smash hit "You don't bring me flowers" Well one of the funniest things I have ever had the privilege to witness was a hilarious rendition performed at the Rugby Club. I can only remeber one of the participants ...Come on down....Brian Hawkins. If any one remebers this the chances are that we know one another. I hope this memory places a smile upon your face and I look forward to hearing from you all.

On Feb 6th, Ramesh Sharma who currently lives in Mufulira posted a message. I sent a few e-mails to him but didn't hear back. I too would like a few photos of Mufulira and the house that we used to live in. If anyone else in Mufulira reads this board, I would like a photo of 22 Ndola Road. We lived there from 1964 until 1975. The house was on Ndola Road right across from the junction with Wellington Avenue. When we were there, there was bush on the other side of the road. Does anyone know if it is still the same? Thanks, Dave McConnachie dave_mcconnachie@hotmail.com

This would really be for someone still living in Mufulira. We (The O'Reilly Family) lived at 9 Kambalanga Avenue - up near the Top Shops. At the time Dad built our swimming pool in the back garden (blue and white!) and Mom wrote our names in the cement with a stick near the pump. I have often wondered if our names are still there and we managed to leave a bit of us back in Muf. If anyone knows someone - who knows someone - who lives in Muf- or knows who lives there now - would LOVE to hear something. Would also love to see up to date piccies of Muf - wonderful memories. Any recent shots of the 8 mile ?? With thanks - Mandy Fenton (O'Reilly) - mfenton@totalise.co.uk

Quick note to Mark Mulder from Gordon Rossiter. Mark you were a little kid in the days when i would stop in for a refreshing drink as I rode home from the mine along Jameson Avenue(now Jomo Kenyatta?). Youd Dad was the Th General forman and taught me lots of the tricks of the trade as I arrived from the UK as green as can be. I would stop when I saw your Mum and Dad standing or tending the garden. I used stop at the Catholic Church if your parent's were not there. I am sure we met and my memory is of a litttle lad about 7-10 years old in 1967-68. Good luck where you are and if you find the time to write I'd love to hear about your Mum and Dad and your brother. I now live in Florida after much travel and raising a family. Dear Mufulirians, Found this site quite by accident as I have only had internet a short time. My name is ANN[neč PELSER] TIRAN and I grew up in J136, K190 and K170 in the years between 1948 and 1958..went to Mary Moffat and then the primary school. Dad who passed away in 1996 was known as Bert Pelser and was captain of the second Rugby Town team..have a photo of the team. Aunt Dulcie and Uncle Neville Rosewarne were our neighbours with their son Robert in K188..recently his cousin wrote in the YOU magazine that she was trying to trace them. Some of my friends that I remember were Elayne Ochse with who I still have contact, Thelma Beaton, Jennifer Coulson, Marcel and Bernie, Tommy Grobbelaar, Theo Mol who I met up with again in 1966 in Pretoria but lost touch again and I've gone blank...who can fill in the others who were at school with us? Miss Starck who was principal at Mary Moffat when I was in Grade 1/2 in 1952 I met again in Cape Town in 1972-73 but also lost touch again. Her sister Phoebe taught with me at Westcott Primary in Diepriver C.T. The years in Mufulira were the best years of my life and I wish we could have them back. My parents moved to Vanderbijlpark when we left Muf at the end of my std 5 year and never had money to visit Muf again although they always wanted to. Both my sisters Susan and Sylvia were born there. Mom is still alive and would love to hear from Dulcie Rosewarne and Duckworth K172 if they are still alive. I married a fabulous guy David with a french surname and a long history and have two fantastic sons Mornč [aged 24] and Jean [aged almost 23]..very proud of them and love them to bits. I can be contacted at ann.tiran@webmail.co.za or P.O. Box 822 Parow 7499. Regards Ann

Obituary – Barry Marshall It is with a very sad heart that I must announce the passing of my youngest brother Barry Marshall. Barry or “Bee” as he was affectionately known was a giant of a man with the most incredible ability to make friends. Bee was born in Chingola in 1957 and after a short while in Broken Hill we moved to Mufulira where we stayed until 1967 and our departure to Phalaborwa, SA. The youngest son of Martin and Joan Marshall, Bee attended the Ross Avenue Primary School and although he was still just a kid when we left Zambia Bee was well know. Bee had the ability to make friends, I once asked him if he ever got bored and his reply was “If I have nothing to do I will go out and meet someone new” Bee was living in Cape Town and had decided to travel up to Phalaborwa to visit our folks; he arrived on the evening of the 7th November and spent the evening with them, in the early hours of the 8th Bee passed away peacefully in his sleep of heart failure. While we are devastated by his sudden and unexpected departure the enormous love that he exuded his whole life long will have to sustain us from here on, and he loved much. He now rest safe with the God he loved so much and who in return lent him to us for such a short while. I will miss him for the rest of my life. Les Marshall - Cape Town

My name is Adrian fisher. I lived in Muf between 1968 and 1975. My Fathers name was Steve and my Mothers name is Barbera. My baby brother was born at Maclcom Watson hospital in 1972(nigel). I have not been back to Zambia since 1976, and feel as though part of me is still living there. I wonder how many people complain about the shortages and the terrible tv (Zam arts) etc. I cannot get out of my head just how well i recall how to get from place to place in my mind and how i miss going fishing at the boating club. I wonder if any one else feels the same or if i am remembering everything too romantically? Adriancodman@aol.com

I am saying hello to all Mufulirians, I hope you had a great stay during the times you lived in Mufulira. I am proud to say that I happen to come from the same place. I am currently in the US, and I happened to visit the place to months ago. Gash!!! Infrastures ranging from roads to those one time beauty recreation places such as rugby club, tennis club, shinde stadium, central sports just to mention but the few are a very sorry sights. I could not help but to drop a tear. I wonder if any of you have been there of recent.Any of you guys have suggestion on how and what should be done about the situation as ex Mufulira residents or we will just keep on being proud for being ex Mufulira resident without doing a thing. If you have a suggetion please send an e-mail to me at chansamat@yahoo.com

Wednesday, 13 August This is in response to the message left by Susan Harvey (nee Ward). We lived near to you in Mufulira and I wondered if I am the Scottish "Jennifer" you remember. My name is actually Janis Turnbull, but my maiden name was Ferguson, and my parents, Joe and Jenny were friendly with Alice and Harry. I remember you although I can't remember if you went to Mufulira High School in 1964, as I did. I was in Hazel Pedley's year, along with Sandra Nealon, Linda Bliss, Irene Barnard, Audrey Beard, Denise Ramsay, Maureen Keogh to name some of the girls I remember. I went to boarding-school in Pietersburg in 1965, and Hazel and Sandra came to the same school the year after me. There were a number of Muf girls at the school, including Barbara Jackson and Ann Haldane. If you remember me Susan, I'd love to hear from you. My e-mail address is jakerole@hotmail.com

It was great leafing through the photographs of the re-unions, but one thing struck me as really strange. All the blokes I played rugby seem all to have aged greatly and look to be real madalaswith (Crossman and Bob Gous you looked positively decrepit!) - whilst when I look in the mirror I don't look any different than I did in those team photographs, taken 40 years ago - or perhaps it's just that my eyesight is fading. Keep it going Gina, it's great. John Horbury (john.horbury@ntlworld.com)

Hi, This is Lindsay Redman. I lived in Muf from 1956 and went to Mary Moffat, Ross Avenue Primary and Muf High till form 2 (1964), when I went to boarding school in Jo'burg. My folks left Muf in 1967 (my dad was an engineer on the mine). I live in Cape Town now and am wondering if anyone knows what happened to Clark Thomas and Brian Hill (his father was headmaster of Muf High)? I'm also looking for Jenny Hearn who emigrated to Australia in 1964. The last letter I had from her just after she left Muf was addressed 'Subiaco, Perth'. If you do know the whereabouts of any of these folk, please contact me on email: redperson@mweb.co.za or phone +27 (21)448-3517. Cell: 082-679-3548. Lovely to see the Mufulira site - I was only six when I went up from South Africa (Jo'burg)and 17 when I left but memories of the wonderful time I had there are vivid. I feel so privileged to have grown up there. Regards, Ms Lindsay Redman
