....Regards, Paudie Coughlan Ex-Luanshyans where are u? Hi Sorry, a correction to the below message, my grandfathers' first name was
Jacobus not Coerte, but as mentioned, he was known better by his nickname Tiger.
In additional, I think my great grandparents, Ethel & Norman Sampson ran the
local hotel in the 1940's/50's. I look forward to hearing from you on my contact
e-mail address -joanne.grobbelaar@hotmail.co.uk. Many thanks, Joanne Hi I was hoping somebody could help me. I am looking to trace anybody who new
my grandfather, Coerte Grobbelaar, nickname Tiger. I think his wife went by the
name of Peggy and I think she worked as a midwife/nurse. He had a farm in
Mufulira. I think it was on the Makambo Rd. His son (my father) was born in 1940
and his names is Andries (could have been know as Andrew/Andy)Coerte Grobbelaar
and he left the country around 1956/58. They had relatives in the area that went
by the surname of Sampson. It would be fantastic if you could get in touch if
you new my Grandfather, Grandmother or my Dad. my contact e-mail address is
joanne.grobbelaar@hotmail.co.uk. Many thanks and I look forward to hearing from
you. To the person who wants to re-visit Muf. It would be interesting to those of
us who lived there at the same time, who you are. I lived in Muf from 1970 when
I was 7 until I went to S.A. in '85. Gillian McCluskey (nee Whitty). To the person who wants to visit Muf - The accomodation here has mainly been
taken up by South African contractors working on the mine. There are a few
places. The Directors Lodge and Newlands House are both now guest houses,
Minister Lemba-lemba has a guest house that is semi-decent, and a South African
woman has 3 guest houses but they are mainly have block booking for whole
companies for months. Also there is a new development opposite Murundu Transport
that will be up and running in a few months that is run by Cing Guests
"grandson-in-law". Hope this helps. i was in muf' from 1980 to 1984, as a kid (d.o.b 1970). i would like to visit
with my wife. where would we stay. Sorry Paul--didn't mean to misspell your last name! Thank you Paul Crowie for your help! I know I am looking for a needle in the
haystack since I am going way back--looking for anyone who knew of my
grandfather, Patrick 'Paddy' McGann and wife and children (Michael McGann and
Sally Townsend--nee McGann). Have had some lovely responses from people trying
to help and from a childhood friend of my mother's. Very interesting to read the
message board even though I was only born in Mufilira and left as a baby. Have
no pics of my grandfather or grandmother and would love to somehow track some
down. Penny Krump (Townsend) bpkrump@yahoo.com Is it possible that the 1940's is incorrect and that it is the early

bpkrump@yahoo.com My brother Noel is definitely going up in december...I will probably be
joining him...apparently we can stay at the Guest House which would be
fantastic. I've got to know the guy who lives in the GM's house....our house
(F70) is still looking great. Paul Cowie... A quick suggestion...quite a few
people are forgetting to put their names with their posts...who are you? I don't remember much about Muf as I was only 5 when we left in 1961. Maybe
somebody remembers something about us. My father and mother were Leonard and
Frankie Naude, we were Sheila, Jean, Eileen and Peter Naude. If these names ring
a bell, may someone can drop us a line. I am interested but sadly, only in late 2007! Fay Lets see who's up for a reunion and when then we can go from there. Re the previous message ,when do you think this reunion might be? cheers
Bob There has been talk of a Muf reunion in Mufulira with about 20 people
interested so far. Anybody else interested? Will get more info on when and where
and will get back, but keep it in mind. My name is peter morgan and I lived in Mufulira from 1965-1967 from the age
of 11-13.My father,Bert Morgan was an engineer in the copper mines.I went to
Eastleigh primary and Muf high.Ive only just seen the pictures of Muf now and
its brought back lovely memories.I used to live at 117 Maybin ave.If anyone
remembers my dad send me an e mail. Morning Fay, We had a great time in Kitwe. Alastair was so excited. It was
nice to have the family together again. How's the move progressing? Rgds
Janis Hi Love to read the messages from the people that lived in the most wonderful
place I have ever been. Keep up the good work. x Hi Janis I hope you all had a good evening on grandsons birthday. Did you get
your power back on? What happens when the power goes off like that? In India
petrol and diesel generators are big sellers due to the powercuts and
stabilizers are used for all electrical appliances, because of the heavy
fluctuations! Fay Hi All, interesting reading about Rhodwins/Lake View! As a teenager in
the60's I worked at Rhodwins over the week-ends. It was owned by the Winter's
(their son Ken was an appy on the Mine). Was a great place to go. Fern, I am
sure you were at school with my brother or sister, Peter/Clare. Were you not
also invoved in The Little Theatre? Peter & I did a lot of shows, mainly
backstage crew, as our mom, Lorna, was a super soprano and was often in the
plays. I was at Muf High 1962-1965. Regards Don Cochran Hi Fay, Gosh, you are in the middle of great upheavals. Moving, they say, is
one of the most stressful things in life. I have heard that BC is one of the
warmest of the Canadian States. It's my youngest grandson's 3rd birthday today,
so we are all off to Kitwe to celebrate it with him. Good thing too, we've had
no electricity since 8pm last night. There was a huge bang at the sub-station
and then no lights. I just hope they will be back on tonight. Regards Janis Hi Janis! Sorry about yesterday, I was rather busy with the grandchildren
being in Montreal. And we are in the process of selling up here and moving to
B.C. so the estate agents were up to take photos of the house etc. to be put on
the market on 1st August. Then Bernadette leaves this afternoon for her high
school reunion in Oregon, leaving the kids with Paul and me. Paul is her
husband. We live in a duplex. We are upstairs. So life as it were is pretty busy.
I always have time to post tho':) Talk to you all on Monday when she returns.
Fay Hi Fay, Was hoping to have something back from you today. I am disappointed!
Regards Janis Hi Anastacia, John Tsochlas was my husband at that time. He died in 1994,
before your father. I will try and approach someone who, I think had business
dealings with your dad, and see if I can come up with any more info. All I know
is that he owned Kenny Engineering, Lake View and had dealings with the Crusher
plant. Lake View is now considered to be an unlucky place. Since both Rex and
Sasha died while living there, there was another man who was murdered there,
there was a young woman raped there and no one seems to be able to settle there
for any amount of time. Regards Janis Born September 1956 at Malcolm Watson Hospital. Attended Convent School.
Resided on Jan Smuts Avenue, Fairview. Enjoyed everything that Mufulira offered
and hopefully contributed to the way-of-life we had. As A youngster I enjoyed
the swimming pool, mine club cinema, gymnasium, ball room, little theatre, also
Rhodwins, boating club/dam, flying club, rifle club and gymkhana club. Enjoyed
walking safari at Luangwa valley. I miss all of this and the many friends who
shared my enjoyment. I still want to return , and I am continually looking for
employment opportunities in Souther Africa. All information of employers are to
be sent to my email address gjmcl@hotmail.com. Hi Anastasia i lived in Muf 1977 to 1982. Lakeview was a place that some
expats went to have a picnic a walk in the country. as conditions grew more
difficult and congolese bandits etc spread across the rural districts some
farmers came into town othere secured their farms. Rex secured his farm with
fencing and gates. The mine at the time was localising their employess and their
contractors so expats were forced to hire/contract/agree with a zambian to go
native or lose contracts. some people were called white zambians so a
partnership was an abused word. many of them finished in the courts. Rex had a
number of different ways of making money, some I'm not even aware of. He was
considered well off if not wealthy at least in Kwacha. one of his ventures was
with Emil now long dead.... another was with the mines subcontracting big
equipment and servicing same etc etc... i knew him to say hello and sometimes
was at the drinks table when he spoke to others in my company. The golf club
held sponsored competitions, many of the big expat companies were sponsors. Most
of their staff lived in Ndola so a competition would draw the big shots from
near and far and i'm sure some informal business was transacted on the verandah
of the golf club. Rex often attended and socialised and networked at these
events. Other than that i never really saw him partying. As I worked for the
government i had no business contact with him. Although i did know Tancred
rather better. When Emil and Rex fell out i went to a few meetings with Emil as
his solicitor was in Ndola... Basically the business was losing money, and Emil
was doing his work on the side and paying little attention to the workings of
the stone crusher. Regards Paud O'Connor. PS I open to correction ps 2 rex was
not an easy man to be friendly with, he was assertive and opinionated, obviously
hard working and had a low tolerance of some nationalities. he was very much a
tough business man. Salut Anastasia,Ça vas bien, Merci!Yes I am still in Montreal but not for
long. No I cannot remember your mum Sophie. But keep posting and I am sure there
will be more information to be had from this site and the GNR.Bonne chance et
bonne soirée Hi There!! Anyone know the whereabouts of Roy Lewis? He will be about 50 now,
un UNZA 1975. The other friend I am looking for is Christopher Vlahakis of
Shiavonga. His family used to own banana plantation there in 1975. He had 3
brothers, Greg, Harry and one more whose name I have forgotten. to the write of the message of the 21 July 04:55 pm "Re: Rex Fertig" Dear
anonymous poster, ive been trying to visit the website of the Ndola Trade fair
but it didn't work out. What was my dad role in that trade? what did he do? what
is the ZIFT? Thank you. Anastasia Bonjour Fay! comment vas tu? bien j'espère. Merci infiniment pour ton aide ça
m'aide vraiment beaucoup. That's nice if you know a little of french, do you
still live in Montreal? do you sometimes speak in french? in Anyway thank you so
much for your help and for sharing your memories baout my dad with me. Im just
feeling like a total stranger because everybody there seems to know more than I
do. I hardly can say I remember something about my time being in lakeview with
him. I was too little I just pictures..hopefully. Im french thanks to mum and
also german thanks to dad. My Mum's name is Sophie. Does it ring a bell to you?
We are from Reunion Island and we've been living there after Mufulira. The
Island is a small rock lost in the middle of the Indian ocean near mauritius
Island. But mum spent 11 years in Mufulira. Ive got another question (among many
others that might never get an answer)..did you the first children of Nina and
dad? Ricky and Jacki? Does anybody have contact with them nowadays? So Im not
Nina's daughter but the last child of dad from his second mariage. And the last
one seems to be the very last to know anything. That might sound ridiculous but
as you worked at the boating club, what did dad used to do? did he drive a boat?
on which river was that? that must have been very nice.... i wish i could go
back and see everything with my eyes. Take care Anastasia. To Paud O'Connor hello and thank you for you message! you seemed to have
worked with my dad is it wrong? what was Lake View about??? I thought it was
just the house we lived in. I don't know very much about my dad's job. More i
discover and it seems that he touched to everything..trading, engineering...do
you know if the persons you named (Andy Hartmann and Emil Wasserman) are still
there? and where do they live? i didn't understand who is the "man with the
limp"? if you could find your notes that will be more than great! i know im
asking a lot maybe too much but i just need to know about anything concerning
dad.. :s The law case that ensued after the partnership with Emil Wasserman what
was it about? did it happened in the 80's? do you know anything from 1987 to his
death? did you know my mum? Im really greatfull for your help. Anastasia Dear Janis, first of all thank you for giving me some informations about my
dad's life. I know a little bit more everyday. But so you knew Tankred? he's the
second son after my dad I think, do you know where he lives nowadays? and Nina
is she still alive? Who is John? the one you said who used to be a great pal of
my dad? was he a collegue? did he know very well my dad? can I find him? Sasha
is the only brother I got the chance to meet and lived with, i got some pictures
of him and I really wished he would be still there. he seemed to like me very
much when I was a baby. Do you know where he is buried and in which
circumstances he died? Thank you very much for you help. Anastasia Morning Fay Yes Sister Holmes did work at the SPCA years ago. My Dad got on
very well with her. He used to like her no nonsense attitude. Her bark was worse
than her bite. She was also at the Malcom Watson Hospital for many years in the
OPD. Janis To the person reminiscing about Zambia-re: rolling the car - we knew a couple
of friends who did exactly that. I don't think Ina and Franz would mind my
sharing this with everyone here. They rolled their big old Vauxhaul on their way
to Malawi once! No problem for Ina, she just got out and together with Franz
they rolled the car back on it's wheels and continued on their vacation! A
little while later the exhaust pipe fell off, so they stopped and picked it up
and continued with the noisy car all the way to Malawi and back!Ever since we
heard that story we would follow them home from the boating club every weekend,
after a FEW beers. They would have their windows open (they did'nt have any
glass) in the car on that very dusty road from the club house to the main road.
We would be right behind them and trying to follow them in the dust.Nearly going
off into the bush as they weaved from side to side.Later I think Franz fixed the
windows with some blockboard pieces to keep the rain off!!Eventually when they
left the country they put all the rest of their belongings (after shipping most
of it)in the same big Vauxhaul and waved goodbye and said we would never hear
from them again and we never did!Neither did anyone else. Fay Janice, thanks for replying. Yes I did notice you had other children younger
than Katy. One could'nt help but notice your Katy ... she was so beautiful! I
remeber your split with John and the time you were expecting your baby, because
we were still there in Muf. No, no it was not Nora at the SPCA.I knew Nora well.
We even played scrabble together at Mary Samaras'.It was Miss or Mrs Holmes.Nora
was a dear! I don't think she intimidated anyone. Excellent sports woman. She
used to organize cricket tournaments between the hockey players and the
cricketers which used to be so much fun. All the wives and ladies of the cricket
club joined in the game.I remember the only time I ever played hockey, that she
had organized, and I shot a goal in my own goal post!! I was mortified enough
not to take up the sport! Never lived it down.Stuck to squash and golf after
that!Nora is sadly missed. Fay Hi Fay, Yes I did have more than one child, but I thought you would remember
Katy as she was nearer Bernadette's age. Taki (Kostaki as he was known then)my
son and another daughter Alex (who now has 2 children, a girl and a boy) I then
went on to have another girl after John and I were divorced. Helen is now 17.
You are right when you say that grandchildren are a joy My oldest is away at
boarding school in SA and is 14. I knew Rex, Nina, Tankred years ago and was a
frequent visitor to Rodwins (as it was called before Rex took it over and it
became Lake View) I remember once going out there with John who was great pals
with Rex to get a christmas tree We were there the whole afternoon and left a
lot the worse for wear! Their bar was full of African carvings of men in
different states of arousal. Obviously a great conversation piece! I believe
Rickie and Jacqui (Rex and Nina's children)are in SA. Sasha (their other son)
tragically died after a car accident. The SPCA is non existant now. I moved to
Kitwe for a while to get Helen into Lechwe School and Jenny Olivato ran it for a
while and then Max Kunda took it over. He was there a short while and then he
and his wife were murdered during a robbery at their home. Since then there has
not been any interest in the place. I think the lady you were referring to was
Nora Jones, who ran the SPCA devotely for many years. She went back to UK and
became ill and passed away a few years ago. Rgds Janis Paud- just a trivia...Drew as we knew him was actually called Dhruv, meaning
Axis in Sanskrit. Fay Paud- just a trivia...Drew as we knew him was actually called Dhruv, meaning
Axis in Sanskrit. Fay Rex had a brother Tancred who frequented Muf golf club and was quite friendly
with drew Solanlki. If my memory is correct Rex did a lot of business with the
mine. I presume this was after Lake view closed to the public. He was connected
in some way with the Mazembe company that imported Caterpillar products, he
occasionally came to the golf club with, I think, Andy Hartmann and ?? bill Reed
( the man with the limp) and was often with Emil Wasserman until their
partnership in the stone crusher sank and a law case ensued. I have notes on all
this somewhere but where ???? Regards Paud O'Connor BonJour Anastasia! (learnt a wee bit of french while living in Montreal, ha,
ha!)I don't ever remember being introduced to any of them. I definitly remember
Nina and it was during the late 70's early 80's.I think she had a mix of
African. I never knew your Mum and Dad.Maybe I knew your mum by sight. What is
her name? Maybe our annonymous poster can give you more details on your dad, as
he seemed to know your parents and about the property at Rodwins (which I
visited maybe twice).Good luck et bien tot.Fay dear Fay,thank you for your message! My dad's first wife's name was indeed
Nina, but she's not my Mum. You might have got confused because my Mum is french
indeed and she's from the island just near Mauritius Island. And Nina was from
Zambia or South-Africa I've never met her. You've got a very good memory! but
i'm wondering of which woman between these 2 you met..thank you very much about
those details and if you remember anything about my dad's life what he used to
do i'll be happy to hear about them! I'm 19 years old and now live in Paris.
Anastasia. Janice, did'nt you have more than one child? How is your son doing and what
is katy doing. Do you still help with the SPCA? I remember there was an elderly
lady who worked there for the longest time! She wasn't exactly cheerfull and I
was always nervous when I took my dogs there. She would be very nice to the
animals tho' and after patting them etc. she would ask me the name. I would
enthusiastically tell her the dogs name and then she would snap back and say
"not the dog's name, YOUR name!" This happened a couple of times and I got wise
to her. I guess it was a bit of amusement for her in that isolated place.Fay I also remember hearing about how vivacious Nina was and how beautiful. Wasnt
she Mauritian or French? Are you her daughter? I remember Rex Fertig and if I'm not mistaken his wifes name was Nina. They
were frequent visitors of the boating club and I remember Nina....so
vivacious! So sorry to hear Rex died. Sincere condolences to Anastasia (lovely
name!).I did not know them personally. But as I have posted before, all the
boating club regulars were like one big family to me. I miss them all even the
ones I did not know by name.Fay Hi For the record Lived in Muf 1960-1963 Musa Kasonka jr PS With Dad off
course and I just learnt on this site that my Teacher , Brian McCoy died (
Tuaght me in grade 7 Lusaka Boys School) to the writer of "Re:Rex Fertig" thank you for your reply and it seems you
know more than me about what happened to the house in lakeview. Have you ever
been there or worked with my dad? do you know how he died? i would be thankfull
if you could write me on my personnal email address: ana.fertig@gmail.com
thanks. dear Paudie Coughlan thank you very much for your reply, i just didn't expect
i would have one so quickly. Im his daughter but never get time to get to know
him. Im just looking for people who could tell me a little about him. here's my
personnal email address: ana.fertig@gmail.com I remember Rex Fertig, but didn't know him that well. Didn't he also have a
successful engineering or construction company?....Regards, Paudie Coughlan Re: Rex Fertig. There are not many people left who would remember Rex after
he passed away over 10 years ago. There is a big exhibition hall at the Ndola
Trade Fair named after him. Lakeview/Rhodwins where he used to live has now been
sold to Australians and is now private, with no plans to resurrect it as a
pleasure resort. Hello everybody! an old friend of mine advised me to try this website
especially if im looking for people or informations about my dad who used to
live in MUFULIRA. His name is Reccared Franz Fertig and he used to live and work
in this town. I'll be glad to hear about somebody who knows him! thanks a lot!
Anastasia Fertig we were just reminising about Good ol' Zambia - the land of the free and no
breathlisers! And one for the ditch literally means that! When you hit the ditch
and roll you just get out roll the car back over and drive on! Where else in the
World can you do this?! Radio Chengelos e-mail address is radioice@zamtel.zm. Hope this helps. Hi, No rhino or Mosi in cans. They used to can Mosi brewed and packed in
Swaziland would you believe! But it was discontinued as it was very expensive.
Although Castle and Ohlssons are canned. Janice! How nice of you to post! Ofcourse I remember you. Besides being so
active with the Trust School Plays (which Bernadette remembers exactly...it was
Finnigans Rainbow)I remember your whole family. I think your mum worked in
Barclays Bank and you and your husband ran Zeus Electrics. You lived down the
road from the Samaras'.I was so greatful to you for taking me and my ridgeback
down to the Vet's in Kitwe, in the SPCA van.I remember Katy too. I have photos
of the play. Well, I envy you all, your lives, in Zambia. I could trade it in a
second! It's been nearly 15 years since we left but feels like it was just a
couple of years ago. Have fun with your grandchildren. They are the best things
that happened in my life! And please keep posting. Fay Thank you very much Paudie for the radio icengelo email address. Hi all! Re: Zambia Breweries, only wanted to find out if they do mosi and
rhino in cans. thankx May thanks to Fay and another who did not name him/her - self I managed to
get the contact phone numbers of two of my friends. Thanks to this message
board! Radio Icengelo http://radioafrica.oneworld.net/contact/company/view/11845
There is an email address there - don't know how current it is.....Regards,
Paudie Coughlan Does anyone know the email address for radio Icengelo in Kitwe? Hi Faye, I don't know if you will remember me, but I used to do the costumes
for the Trust school plays that Bernadette used to appear in. Congrats on her
becoming a doctor. My daughter Katy was a bit younger than Bernadette, and was
also in the school plays. She now has three children (2 girls and a boy) and is
still in Mufulira. There are still a few of us die hards! Regards Janis Turner
(My surname was Tsochlas in those days) Hi, Re: Zambian Breweries - SAB Miller have taken over here so try and Google
it. May i ask what it is in connection with as we deal with them? Also the
expats here are mainly British with a lot of South Africans that work on the
mine, a mix of single contractors and a couple of families that are here to work
on the new smelter project. I guess if you just wrote Zambia Breweries Lusaka it would get there? Does anyone know the web address for Zambia Breweries Lusaka Zambia? why are there no postings on the ex-Luanshya message board? Ex-Luanshyans
where are you? Re the message of 9-35am yesterday, where do the expats come from these days?
are they British? Cheers Bob Re the message of 9-35am yesterday, where do the expats come from these days?
are they British? Cheers Bob Thanks for the response everyone!! You are doing a great job posting the
current events of Mufulira please keep it up.Yes anecdotes of the past and
prsent (not necessarily of Muf.) will be welcome. How about the people who are
looking for people and having found them could correspond on line so we can all
share in their joys of reunion. Just reminicing is great too.Sharing some weird
news in their parts of the world or discussing current affairs or just sharing a
joke every now and then will make this site more interesting. For instance we
were up in a Reservation town called Misstissini,in the north of Quebec,
visiting with our daughter and family, who is doing a one year contract working
at the local clinic. Because of the hot spell we went trough a couple of weeks
ago the forest surrounding the little Cree town (village really, # of people-
3000)was on fire! we were actually witnessing the flames rising up quite close
to our house. This was mid afternoon and I was busy preparing a special meal as
it was my daughters 10th wedding anniversary, and we were asked to evacuate the
town. Not even a week earlier they had to do the exact same thing and we thought
here goes. This time it did not take us long to pack as most things had not been
unpacked from the previous evacuation! So we bundled everything up in two cars
plus the nice meal and the two bottles of champagne we were chilling for the
occasion and and the fire fighter practically dragging our daughter out of the
clinic,(because she did not think it serious enough and wanted to finish her
charts before having to leave again!)joined the convoy that was heading out of
Misstissini to a town called Chibougamou. This is a town for us like Ndola and
Kitwe are for Mufulirans. We can get almost all the neccessities there. But When
we got to Chib. all the hotels were full and so they were designating us to
another LITTLE village called Oujebougamou.Believe me the name is bigger than
the village!Number of inhabitants, 700. So My daughter got a very nice transit
house because there were no other doctors in the village and they needed one
desperately. So despite the fact that she was on call for the weekend, we had a
great time that night and ate and drank the anniversary meal in a completely
strange, quaint little cree village. We stayed for the weekend and were back
Monday afternoon.Fay Fay - another point. Since the arrival of DSTV (satellite TV) There is much
more interesting things on TV than the goings on in Mufulira. So now you must
realise how mundane our lives are here. It is not the party haven of the old
times. Now that Eastenders schedule has been changed on BBC we (might) paint
Mufulira red! Fay - What would you like to chat about? Mufulira is pretty dead at the
moment - most expats have moved to the greener pastures of either Lusaka or
Kitwe, and I have just seen a bus of single contractors on their way to the
airport after the end of their contract(the "ladies of the night" will not be
pleased!)and the rest nothing ever happens. Has anyone got any anecdotes from
the past that others might know about or can contribute to? I will try to keep
others up-to-date about the goings on in Muf - when anything happens. And
nothing too risque either!! Bikash Paul? I sent you J.K.'s email address right after reading your posting
askinfg for it. Guess you gave the wrong email address if you did not recieve.
Fay Hi Fay, I am still waiting for the email with JK's email address Hey! How come no one ever chats on this board like they do on the GNR? No
anecdotes or if there are they are few and far between and then there is no
further discussions on the matter positive or negative.I religiously read the
Muf board every day and you might say maybe I have nothing better to do? But
that is not the case.I am a very busy Grandmother of two very active toddlers
and have a job and full time house work (cooking, cleaning, gardening, taking
care of two cats etc.) plus baby sitting for my Daughter. We have wonderful
neighbours who I play cards with almost every evening and enjoy a walk every
morning, after which she goes to work and I come home, because my work starts
later. I also do some work from home time to time. I decorate wedding cakes. In
the summer The weekends are usually spent golfing with hubby or walking in
search of bargains to all Garage Sales, with my lovely neighbour. Winters are so
hard here that I join the gym to keep myself from getting depressed. So come on
guys lets see some interesting postings, of your lives and experiences. I for
one will definitely read it! Fay Does anyone have the email of Fern Girdlestone, school friend from Muf ? Is
she now in SA ? I would like to contact, last saw her about 10 years ago. We

phimister(smelter) Thank for the link Paudie. Fay FAY....the GNR has not come back online since the maintenance notice. There
is an "alternative gnr" where several regular members are posting while the main
board is down http://groups.msn.com/alternativegnr/messages.msnw
.... Regards, Paudie Coughlan What is happening with the GNR site I cannot seem to get the Message Board. I
know it was unavailable for a time due to updates and maintenance. I did not
think it would take so long. Is it just me or are there others who cannot access
the site? Fay Freemasons Hall - Thanks for the reply, My own lodge too must be pretty
shakey by now. I believe the lodge room in Chililabombwe was burnt down so
meetings were moved to Chingola. Who are you by the way, you didn't say. Regards
Robin Hales My perception of winter changed drastically after experiencing -30C and -40C
for the past 6 years in Canada! Fay. Yes the Lodge is still active although there are very few members these days.
They still have out of town visitors especially at the Masters installation in
August which they come from countrywide as it is known to be a "good do" The
Kabwe lodge closed in the 90's. There is a piano there, I will find out if it is
the one from Kabwe. Fay - Its winter here we are all hibernating. The temperature is a very
chilly 16C at the moment (time 08:50) Although the sun is shining. I am looking for information on the sand plant on the Mufulira Kitwe
road.Origional design, specs, history etc. Steve.C&B Enterprises,Kitwe I view The Muf pages from time to time after reading the GNR posts and
keeping up with the world! It was nice to see the comments re The Freemasons
hall being kept clean. I had many happy hours there visiting from my Lodge in
Chilabombwe, during the late 70s and early 80s. The brothers from the Copperbelt
Lodges used to roam all over Zambia to the various meetings, some quite enduring
friendships started this way. One particular occassion does spring to mind which
took place in Kabwe, Broken Hill. It was the custom then to entertain the out of
town visitors ot the home lodge brothers' expense. On the other hand the home
lodge brothers would relieve the visitors of as much money as possible, for
Charity! Now in Kabwe to this end, it had become the norm to raffle the lodge
piano, with the condition that the prize must be removed from the Lodge after
the meal. I suppose the piano must have raised quite a lot of cash over the
years, until it was won by a Brother from Mufulira. I still have visions of the
piano being carried from the Broken Hill Lodge rooms by the brothers from Muf,
inclusive of a very small pianist playing with great gusto. It was rare sight to
see Derek Mulver's face as his beloved fund raising piano was loaded on to a
vanette for the return to Muf. At subsequent meetings Derek pleaded with the Muf
brothers for a chance to win the piano back. Did they? My other connection with
Muf my daughter Amanda married Tom Powell. Best wishes, Robin Hales ex

email from Gill Main (one of the daughters of Doctor Main, ex Muf) who is in
touch with Mary, sister of Dave. He had had a leg amputated, but was getting on
fine, only to die of a massive heart attack....ALSO, Dave's father, Tommy Snr,
ex-Muf, passed away in Ireland in February this year - RIP ....regards, Paudie
Coughlan Hello to anyone who remembers my Mum, Molly GIrdlestone! She is fine, fit and
still working twice a week helping to do the books at a little shopping centre
in Scottburg. In her spare time she coaches all the rugby teams via TV and also
mentors the politicians on 702 or through the papers! She has not been playing
golf for a long time but enjoys pottering in her garden - and she turns 90 years
young on June 19th. She doesn't want any great announcement, but I thought that
just in case there is an old friend reading this, I'm sure she would love a
surprise phone call - 039 9781975. Best time is about 7.30am or pm (not much
luck during "soapie time"! Or Saturdays...) My best greetings to all Mufulirians
out there! Fern GIrdlestone I am trying to gather as much information as possible about my Mom and
grandparents (all now deceased). Jimmy (James) Rankin married Lillian Jackson,
one daughter Heather Rankin (born 1944). She was head girl of Mufulira High.
They lived on Copperbelt and Bulawayo. Ring any bells with anyone? Thanks Robyn

the Dave Maclean ex-Muf who went to school at Christian Brothers College in Que

(living in Dublin, Ireland) and one of his sisters, Mary (living in London),
were at the GNR Zambian Reunion in Banbury, UK in September 2002. I might be
able to track them down, and ask about Dave. He was living in UK in 2002. I
believe Dave has done a lot of travelling around since he left
Zambia....regards, Paudie Coughlan Looking for contact details or whereabouts of an old school mate. Dave McLean
(Maclean) Last heard of in the UK some years ago Donald Cochran---- Thank you for that info on Michael Wright. It was not I
who was looking for him....Did not know him. I was never involved with the
Little Theatre....perhaps it was Jan? Thanks all the same. Fay Hi, A late message in reply to some questions: Fay, I think the Michael
Wright you refer to went to University of Cape Town Ballet school, but became a
Trapeze Artist in his second or third year. We (the Cochran's) were also very
involved in the Little Theatre. Paul Cowie is in Durban abd teaches at one of
the Crawford Colleges. Regards to all Donald Cochran The Kenwards live near Hereford in the UK ... I nearly got to see them last

Palabora Mining Company. Website is www.pmc.co.za . Maybe you could try
contacting their Human Resources department for info on Cathy. If she's still
there, maybe they would pass your details to her, and she can contact you.
ALSO.... there is a Bruce Lutman in the "Look up old friends" section of this
website. Contact email given is lutmanATventurenetDOTcoDOTza . Maybe he is
related to Cathy's husband, and could point you in the right direction. I didn't
know any of these people in Mufulira, so can't help you further. Good
luck.....Paudie Coughlan Paudie Coughlan. The address for Cathy Lutman is no longer valid as it keeps
on coming back to me. Unless it works for you? Hey Paud Ó C, Good to see the name Paud on an African related board, and even
better, related to the same mining town in Zanbia, Mufulira. I was born to Irish
parents in Africa, christened Pádraig, grew up being called Paudie (for those
who don't know, Pádraig is the Irish Gaelic for Patrick, and Paud / Paudie is
the short version). Your second name is Seosemh, mine is the anglicised
equivalent Joseph. I never came across another person named Pádraig/ Paud/Paudie
until I visited Ireland later in life. I left Muf in Dec 1973, then lived in
Kitwe until 1983. I seem to remember my mate John Costopoulos mentioning another
"Paud" in Muf, circa 1980. To Paud, to send pics e-mail contact@mufulira.co.za. You were trying the
old address. Kind regards, Bridget Simcox(Treasurer/Administrator of The
Mufulira Club) Hi Paudie Drop us a line- stadyatonthenet.com.au I battle to get away from
this place, we have an airconditioning business. Would be good to catch up.
Regards to all the other hooligans mentioned. Noted a while back a post from a
lady saying that she stayed at 8 Chitumukulu. Was kind of kreepy, we were the
first occupants of that house. Always remember trying to squeeze the address on
to the envelope when writing home from school. Know what happened to Ian
Christmas, he was mates with Des Brand. Bumped Chewy down in PE years back. Must
have been around the time Alistair was at Rhodes. Used to see Ali quite often
then. Lot of water/beer under the bridge since then. Best regards to all Steve
Cook My name is Raymond Wilson, From Mufulira 50s /60s. I am looking for some old

info that enables me to say hi - would be appreciated. Ray Wilson Cape Town. Hi Alan, Yes, sadly Harry passed away almost thirteen years ago in
Ireland.Still missed. He got back To Muf around 1990 for a visit. Played 9 holes

taken in Ole Rostad's house in 1980. Paud.... Mumba--- Are you the daughter of Luis Lombe and lived on Jomo Kenyata Avenue
next door to Brian and Sylvia Mc'Gillan? If so, you were our first family
friends,in Muf. Your dad took my kids to9 school till we got our own transport.
Your dad and My husband worked together in the mines. Say hi to your Mum for me.
Bernadette and Walter's Mum, Fay Bradbury. Hi Joe I remember Harry well, he was a great golfer, he played Kac handed,or
the Papwa grip if your from Durban, I met him again in 1980 at a golf tournament
at Portmarnoc in Ireland ,he was a good man. are you telling us he's now playing
elsewhere? Alan I was just browsing and came across this site. My Wife was born in Muf, Her
Dad Harry Mc Quillan worked in the mine when he was not on the golf course. They
left Muf in 74 . My Wife and I returned to Zambia in 85 and lived in Kasama for
7 years. I am in Nbi at the moment and will call my mother in Law Nellie to tell
her about this. I am sure she will be online asap. I am sure it will bring a
tear to her eye, Joe it was lovely to see all the photos from my old home town - i miss it so
much! Love to you all Mumba William (Lombe) Swansea, Wales, UK Mrs Barnard is still in the same place as she was when she was your
neighbour! And Cing guest is still next to Ross Ave School. Does Mrs. Barnard still live on Harmaskjoeld Ave. or has she moved to the
Freemasons Lodge? Fay Both Mrs Barnard and Cing Guest swim every morning in the summer. Mrs Barnard
keeps herself busy keeping the Freemasons Lodge and Boating club so clean you
can see your face in everything. Cing Guest still drives through to Kitwe every
week to see her Great Grandchildren, both at the grand age of 84. Alice Barnard is certainly my role model! She certainly can put any youngster
to shame. Fay Mrs guest must be a great age now, the good weather helps, I suppose. does
she live in front of the High School ?? Talking of Mrs Dickson she is still around here. Although after having a bad
time in Murundu she has now moved to town. I often see her doddering around town
on her two bamboo poles. She retired from Nursing a few years ago, so she no
longer wakes anyone up in the dead of night for their sleeping pill!! Also
talking about older ladies Mufulira probably has the most "older widows" in
Zambia, Theres Mrs Barnard, Cing Guest, Jean Querl and Veronica Allen who with
their energy put most youngsters to shame! MICHAEL HARBOR......There is an entry for a Cathy Lutman (nee Butcher), with
contact details, in the "Look up old friends" section of this website (see link
at bottom of home page) . Regards, Paudie Coughlan Hi looking for any information on Doug Hayden of Mufulira from 1950 to about
1972. He left Muf. and went to NewZeland I think. Please send any infomation
to:-michael.harbor@unitedgroupltd.com PS also looking for Cathy (ne Butcher) STEVE COOK...How'zit. Yes I remember you and Mike telling me about Des
Wandry's Chingola escapade. He was a sort of lovable rogue in that respect. But
a while later, with "Muther's Convention", he did use that trait to get us a
large number of gigs all round the Copperbelt during 1971. As an aside, here is
a link to a picture of Des Wandry in earlier days, from the archives of this
site. Check out the second row down, 3rd pic along (click to enlarge) http://www.mufulira.co.za/photoarch10.html
If the link doesn't work, check out Archive 10...My brother Mike is in RSA, and
flits between Jo'berg and Durban. Alistair is still in Jo'burg, and still doing
commercial music production for the a advertising industry etc. John, Des, Ali
and myself met up in Durban in 2002, and jammed together as a band. See the
links for pictures I posted on this board on 10 May. I'm in Perth, WA so if ever
over in Eastern States will look you up. Keep well.....Paudie Coughlan Hi Paudie & Rest Remember Des Wandrie booking a gig in Chingola (bowls
club?) Went over there with your brother Mike. Des had booked as a 3 piece
band.(Keyboards, drummer and vocalist) Arrived as Des, his drum box and a
Microphone! The boys were less than impressed! Last saw Alister in Jhb about 15
years ago. Was doing session work, production etc. How is he doing? Lee Ouzmann
last in Botswana. We are now on Gold Coast Oz so if you are ever over we could
open an ale. Steve Cook I remember Jack well. Spent many a Saturday listening to the sports results
in his big old car. Donated blood for him along with Sam Zoom and others after a
call to the golf club. Also enjoyed many happy hours at the bar with Jack. John
Whitty. Wonderfull pictures of present day Muf.Clubs and town. Thank you!Fay Well Del as my old man once said.... where the f..k did the last 25 years go
??.... I was in the same ward as Jack in the M.Watson when he died.. some
character, they threw away the mould when he was quarried. Heather Chalcraft of the Great North Road site has got a batch of old Muf
Mirrors off John Costopoulous which she says that she is going to scan and put
on GNR. I will ask her to get in touch with me when she gets around to it and
put the link up here. Del Guest says his Dads car not only could get the horses on Saturday
afternoon but also had auto pilot on the way home from the clubs, and if anyone
saw him coming would jump out of the way! Ray (Raymond) Wilson -Just to say that I was so pleasantly surprised by the
responses I got from the message board. [thanks Paul Cowie ) The guys that are
looking after it get my thanks and appreciation. Anyone that remembers me from
Mufulira would be real welcome to write me I would like to hear from them Heres

MUFULIRA, Hi Amanda Graham, I think you and I were in the same class at Eastlea, and
there is a photo of you taken at my 8th birthday party, will ask my Mum if she
can find it for me. Julia Greenhow now Harrison you can contact me at
harrison_jj@hotmail.com The message for Valerie Rose was from Amanda Graham Hi Valerie Rose, I attended Eastlea 1969 to 1972. Did you have any brothers
or sisters that would've attended after you ? It was great to see those old photos of the band during the 60's and 70's.
Thanks very much for the memories. John really looks no different! I wasnt in
Muf when he had the Morris Minor, I can only recall him driving a green VW. We are "Musungus" living on Chitimukulu Musungu Ave (meaning Great White
Cheif) and my husband is "big Built" and when anyone askes for our residential
address it always causes a stir and lots of laughter with the Zambians! Raymond Wilson, I remember you well, you bugger!!I often wondered what had
happened to you. I can give you most of the updated email addresses, and fill
you in on who is where! Drop me a line at pcowie@crawfordschools.co.za regards
Paul Cowie P.S. Thank you for the update on the Muf pool...wonderful news! DAVE MCCONNACHIE...I'd forgotten about your Muf map on the GNR. It's amazing
how many memories come back just from looking at the various locations on the
map. Houses lived in, schools attended (your sister Liz was in the same year as
me at Muf High School, circa 1965/1966,) clubs frequented, etc etc. Interesting
too, to see the colonial street names. I remember when all the street names were
changed to Zambian names - a lot of confusion for a while but everyone soon got
used to it. The amusing one was Jan Smuts Ave (named after the South African
General). It was changed to Chitimakulumusungu Ave, which as far as I can
remember means "Great White Chief"....Paudie Coughlan RAY WILSON..there is a Melanie Wilson (nee Small,) with contact details,
entered in the "Look up old friends" section of this website (see link at bottom
of homepage)...Paudie Coughlan HELLO LOOKING FOR MELANI SMALL OR RHONDASS SMALL MUFULITA 1960 ? Raymond
Wilson Cape Town RSA Ray@raywilsonproductions.com Hi - my name is Raymond Wilson and I lived in Mufulira in the 50's and 60s. I
went to school at Mary Moffatt, Mufulira Primary and Mufulira High School. I
then went to work in television at NRTV in Kitwe, and moved on southwards after
that. I would love to hear from anyone who may remember me - perhaps Kevin
Bradbury is out there or someone would know where I can contact him. Hello Amanda Graham. I was beginning to think I was the only person to attend
Eastlea. I was there 1959 to 1965. Went back 3 years ago and got an unbelievable
reception. Would like to know when you were there. Valerie Rose (nee Oddy). Message for Robert Hamilton. My name was Valerie Oddy (now Valerie Rose). I
lived at 15 York Avenue at the same time you lived in York Avenue. Did you know
the Riggs, who lived there too? Would like to hear from you. Good Old Paddy! I remember the time when he got ripped open by his pet bull
on his farm. No Exaggeration...he put all of his insides back with his hand and
held it in place and drove to the nearsest neighbour, with Mrs. Dickson sitting
next to him (she did not drive)and the neighbour drove them to Malcolm Watson
hospital! He regularly ate my anchovy paste sandwiches even tho' he said he was
allergic to fish! What a man! He will always remain in our hearts. Fay What about Jack Guest's old car. It did 4 miles to the gallon, and could get
the horses from the UK on a saturday afternoon... and Graham Towensend's car a
Humber I think.. went in the rain drain ..twice. and Nick Nel's Jag.... I bought
it and a mechanic crashed it on the Ndola Road and Paddy Dixon fixed everything
including a sore head... and anything he could not repair his wife could in the
Malcolm Watson. Paud O'Connor There are a number of maps on the GNR site (http://www.greatnorthroad.org/maps/
I sent them the copy of the Mufulira Residential area. I would like to see what
our old house now looks like. We lived at 22 Ndola Road from 1964 until 1975. If
you have the time, could you take a few pictures and post them on a website.
Thanks, Dave McConnachie. My wife Ann Hedges was in Copperbelt, Mufulira, Luansha as a child 1950 to
1964. we are going back in Oct 06 and are looking for old/new street maps of
both towns, Mike McKee Thank you for that heart warming news of the pool. Tom and Margarette must be
so proud of their children! Well done! Fay Re: The pool Have been to see the pool and the dirty water has now been
emptied and work is underway to scrape off the black algae, repair and paint.
Hopefully with Mine funding it will be ready for the New swimming season in
August. Mufulira has produced some World class swimmers over the years, more
recently the Kuenzli's and a Zambian swimmer now based in Australia who all
represented Zambia in the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and Manchester. Also
Victor Malwa who became the first Black African to swim the English Channel last
year to raise money for the SOS childrens village here in Zambia. There are alot of old cars and trucks still bombing around town - including
Alice Barnards old car (cant remember the name) and Cing Guests old escort. Did
try to look at the old Toyotas number plate as there are actually 2 of that
type. If i get the chance i will take a photo. How can you tell that particular van is still bombing around town? Unless
it's your photograph! I remember our first car we ever owned in our life! It
belonged to someone called Clift and they were leaving Muf.This car was an old
'63 model white Ford Cortina, parked in his yard needing a whole new engine! My
Mechanic husband bought it for K 300 and thought he got a bargain. He repaired it
and we used it for more than three years. I learnt to drive in that car and one
day the hood just flipped up while I was driving and gave me such a start I
almost ran off the road.We had to put a complete new bonnet which was hard to
find. Finally we got one from the mine scrapyard but it was blue. So we had this
white cortina with a blue bonnet and finally sold it for K500! Fay Loved the photos. If you look to the right of the Morris Minor - the little
Toyota van, it is still bombing around town! Paudi-- That's how I remember Muf .....from those two pictures.....We arrived
three years later and that is how the town area looked. Altho' it deteriorated
while we were still there, I still remember it that way. We got to know John
really well during the latter part of our stay in Muf. My daughter did some
backing track for his songs (piano) and also did a bit of singing for one of his
shows in Kitwe. 'Save the Chimpanzee' show, to be exact. She was spending some
time with us between High school and university. John is some Musician and
entertainer! I still remember some of his jokes. Were you still in Muf. in 1976?
There was a big exodus of ex-pats in 1978. We really did'nt know that many
people by then.Fay http://www.greatnorthroad.org/boma/Mufulira_Photographs
.... FAY.....There are two Mufulira photos taken in 1973 on the above GNR
(Boma)link. The black Morris Minor in the centre of the picture on the right
belonged to John Costopoulos. At the time the photo was taken, John reckons that
his brother Roger was probably driving it. The net reuniting cars and
owners!...PAUDIE FAY.....Well it was a bit of a struggle but I got there in the end....Yes,
that particular reunion in Durban in 2002 with John Costopoulos, Ali and Des
after 30-odd years was something I will never forget. And after all those years,
we didn't play too badly either. The best number of the night was "Smoke on the
Water" - really heavy, with John in top form. Muf musicians
rock!!!!....PAUDIE Paudie Thanks for taking the trouble to send us the links. I went to the GNR
(boma) and saw the pictures of the band in the 60's and the ones of 2002! It's
wonderful that the four of you have kept in touch and were able to get together
after so many years. That's what friendships are all about, especially the
Zambian one's! Fay MUF BAND PHOTOS.......last try.......the webpage with the links is....... http://www.greatnorthroad.org/boma/Category:Musical_Notes MUF BAND PHOTOS.....link didn't work again..... very embarassing......try

Charlotte Tissie Becker is in Mufulira but is a bit ard to get hold of. Will
try. Cant believe that the swimming pool in Muf is now a "black hole" that is
really sad to hear. Like Fay, I remember it in the 70's when it was a fantastic
place to spend time. Sorry to hear that the clubs are now hardly around. I was
hoping to go back sometime next year and to take my husband to a place which was
so very close to my heart. Dont know if I can now.... I would like to keep it in
my mind as it was. Jan Can anyone help I am looking for Tossie Becker Urgently. I think he is in the
Kalulushi / Mufulira area. He needs to call me urgently Belinda
09267118990230 Hi! My name is Amanda Graham (brother Russell + sister Alison)were in Muff
1969-76. Dad Eddie was a SME at Muff west and mum Deirdre was a teacher at Muff
Primary School. I attended Eastlea with further schooling in England with
frequent visits back to the family on the "lollipop" flight.Spending many days
at the pool and days/evenings at the golf club To the current resident of Muf.---- It's so sad that the beautiful swimming
pool has turned into a 'black hole'!! It must be awful for you especially if you
have been in Muf. during the 70's and 80's or even longer when it was in it's
glory days. Altho' I know there have been alot of changes and things have
deteriorated drastically, it was hard to picture the actual changes and now I
don't know if I care to do that. Perhaps it is best to just stay with the
memories. Brian - how is your brother Gary? and your parents and your cousins
the Dickerson boys. I remember one of them falling off the top floor of the Top
Shop flats! He was okay after. You boys played with my children at the boating
club. I even have a photo of some of you. Will try and post them on this website
as soon as I get a scanner!!Cheers to all and thanks for the memories. Fay
Bradbury hi to all those touched by a wonderful country and a life time of memories
that will never fade. i look on the web site for old friends and laugh at
experiances that i too went through.its nice to hear of old
names,Blairs,Maynard(philip im sorry you fell of your chopper whilst i pulled
you along on my motor bike along hombwe ave)jones,Moons,Mangeroti(poulo you
never did fly that jumbo jet)Ronnie lowe(booze cruise when i knocked you flying
with your mini into the bushes at the Wittys place).i trust all is well as can
be with everyone since loosing such a life style as we had in zambia.take care.
Bryan Newbold. Hi i am a current Muf resident and i have read the message from Charlotte.
The clubs are still there but are not the same as the Mine has pulled
funding. The Swimming Pool is a black hole and a glorified tavern. The Golf Club
is still very nice and you can get a lovely meal there very cheap. There is no
gym here in Muf but there is a well run one in Kitwe. We have a Shoprite
Checkers, and most people go to Kitwe for school, shopping, entertainment etc.
There is a small expat community, with a mix of South African contractors on the
mine and old time Mufulirans. Muf is a lovely quiet town and i much prefer
living here to Kitwe. Thank You for the two new photos. The one of the dam brought tears to my eyes
as we were there at the time and our own boat must have been on the other side
of the pier where the small boats were docked. We had some great times on the
punts pictured, braii's and fishing every weekend. Thank you, whoever was
responsible for the pictures. Fay Hi Charlotte Lucky, lucky you!! I was in Mufulira from 1974 to 1978 and as
far as I can see not much has changed! There are loads of clubs and a fantastic
swimming pool there. Have a great time.... Jan To the Administrators of the this Website I'd just like to say a BIG THANK
YOU for reviving the site. There are so few of us left in my age group that it
is heartening to know that there are some who still care! Keep up the good work

never heard from any of the wonderful friends I made during my time in Muf but
hopefully this year will be different! I was in Muf with my husband Gordon
Richards from 1974 to 1976/7. I did a lot with the Little Theatre and my time in
Mufulira was the best of my life. It is my greatest wish to go back one day and
see the places that meant so much to me. Has anyone else been back for a
holiday? Anyway, my name is now Jan Wilson but was Jan Richards, still good
friends with Gordon just not married to him anymore! Anyone who may know me I
would love to hear from you. Best wishes Jan Welcome to the resucitated Mufulira.co.za website - please feel free to add
