Letter to all Mufulirians - below...

Welcome to the MUFULIRA CLUB Web Site, which has been launched with the assistance and contributions from a group of people who were privileged to have lived on the Northern Rhodesian, now Zambian Copper Belt paradise in Central Africa and who were even luckier to have lived in the town called MUFULIRA just south of the border of the Belgian Congo, now called the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

This is a non-commercial, non-profit Web Site established for the purpose of those who once lived in Mufulira, or still do, to have fun by making contact with the long lost friends, neighbours, work- and school- mates or lovers from that special time, or to share old photographs of interest or to post an old memory on the message board.

That period in Mufulira was indeed a special time. Seldom will it be possible for people who once lived in a small town - 40 years or more ago - to come together as happened at the Riverbend Country House in Fourways, North of Johannesburg at the Mufulira-Get-Together and pick up on and renew old friendships and acquaintances as if they were only from yesterday. Read more on our Mufulira Mirror page.

If you, or your parents or siblings once lived in Mufulira, pay a visit to our contact lists of previous and present residents of Mufulira.

We hope that the surf through this site will bring back many old memories and  friendships, and re-establish contact with each other.

For more information and letters, please scroll down.

To all Mufulirans and ex-Mufulirans,

To all Mufulirans and ex-Mufulirans

Firstly, thank you to all of you who have contacted me since July 2009. I want to apologise for not replying. I was in my final year of my BA Degree so was tied up with assignments etc then I started work this year as an editor freelancing. I know it’s no excuse to neglect all you wonderful people.

Secondly, I am looking for someone to take over my position of treasurer and administrator, as I am no longer able to do it due to working full time and doing my honours degree. If anyone knows of someone who would be interested, please contact me so I can tell them what it entails. They don’t need any experience in website maintenance although it would be a bonus if they are able to handle that as well as Sandy Brück would like to step down too.

I would like to hand over to someone by 31 January 2011 if possible.

Thank you all for your correspondence and encouragement. Thank you too for sharing your memories with me. I have enjoyed the past 5 years with you.

Please feel free to contact me.

Kind regards
Bridget Simcox

We had a Mufulira reunion in a little village in South Wales called North Cornelly in June 2008.  My name is Ray Ward, I worked in the Boilermakers shop on repair & maintenance of skips & cages from 1967 to 1973.  The people at the reunion time in Mufulira ranged from 1965 to 1985. I will send ten photos one at a time as we seem to be having trouble sending more at the same time...

Subject: HISTORY OF THE LAST POST SHELLHOLE, (MOTH CLUB) MUFULIRA

Dear Bridget

Going through all my dad's papers I came across this history of the Moth Club which I am sure a lot of folk from Mufulira would remember.  See attached scans of the actual document.  I have also scanned in a photo of my Dad, Les Shaw.

The Flying club is also mentioned.  I found a photo of it taken in the 1950's which I thought you might also like for the website.

There is also a photo of my Dad leading a MOTH memorial parade in the 1950's.  He is second from the right.  Unfortunately I can't remember who the other Moths were in the picture.

I will be flying up on 2nd April and will return on the 14th April and during that time will visit Mufulira and will take photos of the Moth Club as it is now, plus any other photos anyone else would like me to take.  They must just contact me before the 1st April.

Kind regards
Jackie Green (nee Shaw)

Hi Bridget
Thanks for the up-date.
I thought I would advise that my Mom, Elsie Flanagan as all old Muf would remember her, died yesterday after a very long and painful illness with Oesophageal Cancer.
She was married to Bill Flanagan who ran the Cinema.
She leaves behind her three children Cilla, Billy and Maureen.
Many thanks,
Maureen (Mo)

Dear Bridget, thank you for this e-mail. My name is Ron Gibbons I live in Ladysmith, Natal. I have lived here since 1974 it’s a small town a little larger than the copperbelt towns but the same friendly type of people we had in N Rhodesia. I only spent two years in Muf. From 1959 to 1961 before going back to the UK where I spent two years after which I decided to return to N.R. I contacted R.S.T and was offered a position at Luanshya where I stayed until 1967. when Zambianisation started I was offered the golden handshake as it was called then, I accepted it and moved to South Africa I considered Rhodesia but the writing was on the wall even at that stage. I know there were a few Mufulira reunions held in the Transvaal but only found out after the event. I did however attend the only one that I know of which was held in Pinetown at the rugby club, and really enjoyed it, pity we don’t have more of those. We have a Luanshya reunion every year here in Natal at the moment it is held in Westville, we attend every year it’s held on the first Sunday in May, this year we had over 60 people there and each year it’s fantastic to see all the faces we knew from Luanshya. Well that’s all for now, please keep in contact. Kind regards, Ron. my e mail address is m&shydraulics@intekom.co.za

Subject: Any information?

Trying to gather info to start a family tree for my girls.

Hi my name is Nolene my Mother Dawn Dempsey her father being Conrad Dempsey (as I found out recently everyone called him Jack Dempsey a reference to a boxer?) Lived in Mufulira and think he worked on the mines I have no information about him and his family, (he passed on when I was two years old).

Dawn Dempsey and Robert P Viveiros were married on the 16/08/1958 in Mufulira.

Dawn’s and her brother Clifford (married to Jenny who still lives and has recently moved to Cape Town (my original home town) Dempsey have passed on. Mom had stepbrothers and sisters don’t know all the names.

I have attached three photographs of Mom and her Dad, another with Mom, Robert, Jean Johnson-Robson (maid of honor (also passed on, Jean was Roberts sister) and Attie Nel (best man) also the front cover of her wedding album (I believe she won the bride of the year).

Please if any one has got any info about any of these people except Aunty Jean (although am still trying to find sister my aunt Charmain who still lives in Cape Town).

Also Moms  mom I cant remember her name I do remember meeting her twice when I was little once in Cape Town and once in Durban. I know that she left Conrad Dempsey and had more than a few children from other men. And has a colorful life, as my mom would say… I’m only saying this to let anybody who has info and gossip not to hold back as they may think of offending me… not a bit of it …give me all the gossip please!!! Later Conrad re-married again but only now her as Oma; I met her in my late teens when we immigrated to Rhodesia round 1977  Oma had children before she married Conrad Dempsey  I think she had two girls and two boys??.. Louis?…?,,Laurence, and a brother called manakie (sure I haven’t spelled that correct, I also think that maybe that was a nickname?)?????

Any info would be greatly appreciated good or bad I still want/need the info.   would not be surprised if any info found on Robert Patrick Viveiros is bad …cause I guarantee you he got a lot worse!

I now live in the UK

Hi,

My name is Michael Henriksen and I originate from Denmark. I lived in
Mufulira 1980-82 with my parents Erik and Elsebeth (know as Elsa). I was 12
years old when we left Mufulira. We were good friends with the Fertig
family, Helmut and Gardi Bergeman and Sammy and Kiki (can't remember their
surname). In 2001 my wife, daughter and I moved to Germany because I got a
job there. By chance we ended up in a town called Willich and bumped into
Gardi in the local ice cafe. Small world. We now live in Harpenden, UK. My
parents divorced in 1984. They both live in Denmark and are now retired.

Best regards,

Michael

My Dad Michael Hoyne worked at your mines but I do not know for how long.  I found a blasting Licence dated 13.09.46.  I am just wondering if you can find any information on my dad.  When I was a child I was told he helped raise money??? To build a church there and his name was put on the wall.  He also worked with a John Doyle who was there at the same time as my dad, he was from Northern Ireland.  An address for dad on the Blasting Licence was as follows Luaushya.

He was married there to a woman whom I do not know her name.  The marriage lasted two years as she died from T.B. from what I can remember.

My dad died when I was 8 years old and I am now 44 years old.

It would be lovely if I could get some information on my dad.

My name is Mary Hoyne, Mollassey, Callan, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland.

I really look forward to hearing from you and pray that you will be able to help me.

Subject: Material for the Mufulira Club website

hi my son from Abu Dhab  has just sent me the Mufulira Club  website
so very interesting    I am in Scottburgh  on th South Coast of Kwa ZuluNatal at present

and my two eldest children were  born at the Kitwe Hospital  we moved to Muf in 1961

and names I have picked up from your web are the Gallotti 's perhaps the girls remember me Lorraine Holloway
I believe one of the sisters plays  golf at Kloof where my daughter played until recently

Dawn and Dina (I think) used to babysit  for my two when they were very small
we liv ed around the corner in Muf and Baby Gallotti their mother
was my Mother's cousin
from what I remember there were seven children in the family most of whom had names starting with a D
I have five children all grown up Tony and Teresa  then came Nicolette Michael and Christopher
Tony is in Abu Dhabi Chris in Florida USA Nicolette in Scottburgh and Michael and Teresa in Durban
sadly my husband Charles passed away  in June last year after 51 years of marriage we all miss him terribly.

He was with Deloittes in Kitwe auditing and then joined the Mufulira Club as Accountant/Finance Manager in 1961 we were there when all the refugees  came thru  from the Congo
I remember in 1960 July streams of refugees came thru to Kitwe from the Congo and the OK Bazaars which was fairly new at the time just opened their doors so anyone could help themselves free of charge to baby  clothes food and whatever was needed
many of these people spent months with families in their homes . This was a great gesture from the OK.

and as our house in Mufulira was the last on the road to the border we had even had a lion walking down the road perhaps I will remember more when given some thought  nearly 50 years ago is a long time but we had some of the best days of our lives there

Charles also played in the KitweCricket Team

my brother Noel Byerley and his wife also lived in Muf for a while he was working on the mine when in Kitwe I worked at Duly Motors  about 1958 -1960

regards for now

Hello:
I just found the Muf page. Although I did not live there I used to go to Muf quite a lot and shoot on the rifle range in friendly competition. Usually folks from Kitwe, Luanshya and Chingola were there as well.
I did note a request from a John Warburton looking for Bill Knott. Last I heard he was in Ottawa, maybe the DCRA has his contact address.
I lived in Chingola for seven years - what a wonderful time we all had in such a great part of the world. Have been in Canada for many years now but still remember with nostalgia.
