Subject: LOOKING FOR BRIAN FRANCIS
Dear Ms Simcox,
We are trying to trace the whereabouts of Brian Francis.
Brian was at school with us at St Charles College Scottsville Pietermaritzburg and matriculated in December 1956.
Brian lived in Mufulira and our efforts to trace him have so far
failed, possibly you may know of him.
I am copying in Gerry Daniels who lives in your part of the
world, Germiston I think, as we recently met here in Pickwick near Corsham Wiltshire England where I live, and spoke of missing ex St Charles school friends.
I used to live in
Zambia, early 1964 through to the beginning of 1976, I worked for Barclays Bank in most of the Copperbelt towns but not Mufulira.
We
were part of the
1956 matric
class at St
Charles College,
a boarding
school in Pietermaritzburg, and
I guess that
Brian would then
have been 17 or
18 years old.
A 50th
anniversary
reunion was held
in Nov 2006 in
Pietermaritzburg,
but we unfortunately
had no idea of how
to contact
Brian. His
father was an
electrician on
the Mufulira
Copper Mine, and
he had a sister
Denise who I
think completed
her schooling at
the Loop Street
convent in
Pietermaritzburg a
few years later.
I
spent the 1956
July school
holidays with
Brian and his
family in
Mufulira, and
one of the other
Muf families I
met were the
Erlanks.
If I remember
correctly, they
had 2 daughters,
the elder of
which was named
Eugene who did
her senior
schooling at
Kaffrarian Girls
High School in
the Eastern Cape.
Kind Regards and Best wishes for 2008

It
is with deep
regret that i have
to report the
death of Suzanne
Tavener, nee.
Gibbs, nee
Cassidy, she
always remembered
Mufulira and the
many memories of
her life there. We
just never got the
opportunity for
her to get back to
Mufilira, where
her beloved Dad,
Jack is buried. |

Hi I have just found this website and I am rather in shock – thought it was part of my life lost and forgotten.
My name is Amanda but was know as Mandy Stewart as a child. We lived in Mufulira between 1967 -1971
My Father was Donald Stewart Deputy Town Engineer during this time.
My Mother is Sheila Stewart who taught and ran a nursery at Pooh Corner.
We are four children Mark Mandy Paul and Penny and lived at 9 Viscount Ave which changed to Kudu St.
Mark went to the Covent and I went to Eastlea.
Please add my details I may find someone I knew back then.

Hello,
I would like to update my details on the MUFULIRA web page, (which is really well done - by the way ! )
I am planning to go - have a 'look see weekend' -to Mufulira and copperbelt, was wondering if anyone could recommend good mid range hotels -Mufulira or Kitwe ? or have any other advice ?
I work in Television Production in Zam- Zim and RSA -and am running my small guesthouses in Cape
Town & Johannesburg
www.twotwentyfour.co.za for anyone interested.
Also on the look out for any old friends who might visit this web site : Jitendra Sampat, John Fairbairn, Jean Walker,
-anyone got this info ?
Good to read stuff from Deric Collocott, Paul Cowie. Fern Girdlestone. I have also heard some time back from : Maureen Harbour/Werner, Heather Marr, Beryl Farnsworth, Rhondass Small, Melanie Wilson Small, Barry Collocott, Max - ? Albert Lagnado,
I will be sending some pics of Mufulira, - 2008 -to you on my return - wonder how different they will be !
Keep up this good web site -lets all send in some donations - however small -- This was our life !!
Kind regards
Ray

Looking up old
friends of the
50's
Morning
to all,
Am
writing on
behalf of my
father, C A
Janson, Fred.
He is living in
Marble Hall now,
and will be 88
in Oktober.
Very up and
going still,
must be the old
Mufulira water.
He is still very
active in the
science line and
updates and
would like to
contact people
of the Mufulira
mine now, to
know how they
are doing stuff
now. He
was responsible
for many changes
in the mining
process all over
the world during
his work and
studies at
Mufulira.
Going in on the
websites of
Mufulira now, My
heart nearly
broke and the
'plundering'
sorry afrikaans
word, of Africa
is absolutely
******.
Mind
you, that is
going on all
over the world,
that the rich
countries are
'plundering' the
so-called 3rd
world countries.
I
would gladly
forward any
e-mails and
information to
him as I 'look
after him', not
that he needs
it, or wants it.
Thanking
you,

Hello,
My
name is Anita
Wareham (nee
Trapnell).
I lived in
Mufulira from
1968 to 1969.
I attended
Mufulira High
School. We
used to live in
Canberra Avenue,
then Kent
Avenue, also we
lived in the
flats behind the
Top shops.
Sadly our time
there was marred
as my family and
I were involved
in a road
accident on the
way to Ndola.
My brother
Julian was
killed. He
used to work for
Delta Electric
as a TV
engineer.
My father was a
teacher at
Eastleigh
Primary School
where I used to
go and join in
with the pupils
and play
netball.
(His name was
Patrick
TrapnellI and my
mum was Marian.
I remember the
Dambo. I
also remember
some names from
the past.
The Mulligan
Family, I used
to play with
Anne the
daughter, also
the Schmidt
family (Julie in
particular).
Some other
teachers I
remember were
Steve Tresseder,
Robbie Ivers,
Edgar Lundel.
After
the accident all
my family were
in hospital with
their injuries,
but I was
unharmed.
I went to work
in a shop which
was owned by a
Scotsman.
We used to sell
shoes, fabric,
menswear, ladies
wear etc.
I cannot
remember the
name offhand.
It was down the
bottom of the
main street
opposite a shop
owned by some
Greeks.
I
do have some
photos of the
pupils from
Eastleigh
Primary if
anyone is
interested.
Also I would be
interested to
know if anyone
can remember us.
Looking
forward to
hearing from
you,
Anita.
